Will You pay extra for using Whatsapp, Viber and YouTube – Anti NetNeutrality Laws Framing in India

Well you might have been hearing this term from quite some time now and also that ISP’s and Telco’s are trying to use these against you, well in this post we will be trying to get you to know what it is and how it will affect your life if they get it enforced by TRAI.

What is it?

Net neutrality (also network neutrality, Internet neutrality, or net equality) is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet equally, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication.

And when the opposite happens, when they try to tell you pay extra for what you are surfing, downloading and streaming- that’s Anti-NetNeutrality Concept.

What is the Current Situation in India?

In India the situation is getting worse day by day, telecom companies are blaming OTT Services like WhatsApp Messaging, Viber calling and YouTube streaming to cause a considerable decline in their Voice Calling Revenue and TRAI seems to agree to them.

To make it very clear- it’s a big pretty lie, they are making much more money in DATA Services then they are losing in Voice Calls. VOIP might be hurting their main emphasis but is promoting and marketing their DATA Services, it is reported that they will be making 2.8 Trillion with their internet services.

What are they suggesting?

They have sent all their reports to TRAI and the department of communications to make amendments to the law for asking approval for making internet a la carte menu and not all you can eat buffet, and TRAI is reportedly letting them do so.

What will change with Anti-Net Neutrality laws

How will it affect the end-user?

If this happens, You’re Internet Connection be soon like your Television Subscription service (DTH), you’ll be paying for a standard set of websites to use and then with every other website you will be required to purchase an another pack that will let you use that website, and if you don’t opt for a package then you will be separately charged.

Airtel has already violated the terms of NetNeutrality by starting AIRTEL ZERO a plan that lets you enjoy Facebook and some other websites for free and other than that you’ll have to pay for other websites.

What can you do to stop it?

You can do absolutely everything to stop it, like I did a RTI to seek information and signed a change.org petition to ask for answers from the higher authority and as all we can possibly guess that TRAI might not be willing to help us in this matter- if they don’t want to upset big market players but nonetheless this is a government agency and it will habve to perfroma according to our values and ideas whether they like it or not.

Here is the link to petition, and this is the email address (TRAI EMail Address). You can also use hashtag #netnuetrality on Twitter and Facebook to promote. You have any problems understanding this or you want to suggest an edit, please feel free to ask us in the comment box below. Save the internet as you know it.
