Windows 10 was released just a week back and the company said that it has gained enormous response with 14 million copies sold in just 24 hours and downloads that amounted to 6% of overall internet traffic for a day. Woah!
wait, it was about Ransomware, right?
Yes, coming right to it, so some people decided to take advantage of the situation, using mail spoofing. They sent emails to users telling them that their free download was ready, when the victim managed to download the file and install, they are greeted by a ransom note to either submit the entire ransom amount in 96 hours or to loose all their data.
It uses a CBT-locker ransomware to lock you out of using your PC/laptop.
The mail is copied from the official mail, cloning the text and colour scheme but there are few text spelling mistakes. Hackers managed to spoof the email with id update@microsoft.com, and the real address was traced to Thailand. Cisco is following the story and hoping to reach the bad guys soon.
and, don’t worry, we’ll keep you updated about the latest news on the matter. Till then, stay cautious while downloading anything from Emails, especially when you don’t know the sender.
