We all know Corning Gorilla Glass, to all who don’t have the information just yet- it is the toughened glass coating that helps the smartphone or the tablet to get extra protection against scratches and also to some level it prevents shattering of the screen. The company Corning, which also makes glasses for other consumer products like LED and fiber-optics, but the mega part of there sales are in harmony with the rising sales of smartphones that uses corning’s protection.
Previous year, the company sold more than 3 Billion units of the Gorilla Glass , which was widely used in the consumer smartphone electronics including iPhone 6 and the 6 plus, Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Note4 and the company, some months earlier also launched their offering, the Gorilla Glass 4 which is ready and started shipping to the manufacturers for use.
Now, reportedly the company is in pressure from its biggest customer- Apple, to make a substitute of sapphire. Firstly, Sapphire is the hardest material to be known for making screens that is almost unbreakable and retains no scratches whatsoever and apple was really interested in this material when it first came out. Apple also made a huge investment in another startup company which aimed to research and develop sapphire and also to make it relatively cheap to manufacture because sapphire is expensive to produce, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy and now apple wants corning to develop a substitute technology which can compete against sapphire.
Yesterday we heard something about a Project Phire, this project is started by corning to keep up with the latest of their technology in the toughened glass market, the research to create a material that is equally strong as sapphire and does not makes the coating or the glass thicker than it is now. The Glass 4 does not shatters easily under direct forces, but is believed to be more prone to scratches than sapphire.
so Project Phire is all about creating the protection that not only is scratch resistant also does not shatters easily.
Also in a interview the company confirmed that the Project Phire and said that we know that the property of sapphire is great when it comes to scratch resistance but it holds low when it comes to the shattering of the glass, so Project Phire is all about creating the protection that not only is scratch resistant also does not shatters easily.
We are not so sure about how the result of the Project Phire would be released, it can be a separate product by corning or can be the next gorilla glass as Gorilla Glass 5. We’ll have to wait for that, and if you have any questions about this article please be free to ask us down the comments.
